Wedding bouquets have been a common wedding tradition for years. But did you know the real reason brides carry a bouquet on their wedding day?!

Many brides believe a wedding bouquet tradition stems (pardon the pun!) from the beauty of flowers, that helps compliment her wedding gown on the most important days of her life. Although bridal bouquets have become a prevalent part of the bride’s outfit, many brides do not know the real reason they wear this on their wedding day; besides romance and visual beauty there is a deeper reason for why brides carry a wedding bouquet.

Tradition

This tradition goes back to the 15th century when people didn’t bathe very often. The most common time to get married was June, with brides having their yearly (yes yearly!) bath in May (WOW). This meant that brides often didn’t smell the best on their special day.

Did you know, wedding dresses would be shared amongst siblings as a tradition and often many families had nine or more siblings, all sharing the same dress, so by the time this gown was passed down generations it was far from fresh, crisp and clean like wedding dresses of today.

Therefore, wedding bouquets were introduced!

Wedding bouquets were used to hide the smell of body odour on their wedding day! Who would have thought that this reason has caused such a big tradition for brides through to the 21st century!?

“You can splurge on a pricey dress, but if it’s not altered properly it won’t look any better than a gown that’s a tenth of the cost,” says Terry Hall, fashion director of New York City’s Kleinfeld Bridal.
No matter what style gown you choose for your wedding day, the most IMPORTANT part of this, is the fit. Your wedding gown should fit perfectly. Not only should you look amazing, but you should also feel amazing in your wedding gown, ensuring for comfort throughout your entire wedding day.

Why is it important to have a specialist seamstress?

Bridal alterations are like no other, wedding dresses are delicate and complex, so an experienced seamstress is essential, they must have a high level of skill and knowledge. Having your wedding gown altered comes with many complexities and is extremely labor-intensive, from hand sewn beadwork to hand picking the lace from your hem (without any detailing being lost). You as a bride must not worry about your alterations, this is the time for you to communicate effectively with the seamstress to achieve your desired look, but ultimately, put your trust in your seamstress.

What is the difference between alterations and bridal alterations?

The alterations will ensure for perfect fit meeting your specifications and most importantly, make you feel amazing. A well altered gown should support your bust, accentuate and compliment your body shape and be the perfect length, covering your shoes without you tripping over. A skilled, experienced, bridal seamstress will be able to dramatically change the complete look of a dress if required. Bridal seamstresses will be trained in how to make more extensive changes such as customisations like adding sleeves, extending or shortening the train, beadwork, changing buttons, adding a bustle and many many more!

When should I start my Wedding Dress alterations?

Alterations should ideally begin 6 weeks before your wedding date, however, seamstresses can alter your dress in less time, if necessary. Your final fit will be a week to 2 weeks before your wedding, which will ensure your dress fits you perfectly on your wedding day.

How many fittings will I need?

You will generally need minimum 2 fittings, one to be measured and pinned, the second to try your dress on for any adjustments. Depending on how many alterations your seamstress has had to make, will determine how many seamstress appointments you will need.

When should I stop losing weight?

In terms of alterations, once you have been fitted you must try and maintain your weight, otherwise, you will need further alterations which ultimately, will cost you more. Remember ladies, you DO NOT NEED TO LOOSE WEIGHT FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY!

What do I need to bring to my alteration’s appointment?

– Your bridal shoes
– Your wedding underwear (seamless and nude to avoid showing through the fabric)
– Bra cups (if you do not have these your seamstresses will have these for you)

Who should I bring to my fittings?

Bringing limited people to your fittings is advised, only bring those with you that you know will help you achieve the best fit. Also bring with you someone you trust to give their honest opinion and someone that will be there on your wedding morning to dress you – please make sure they watch and learn from the seamstress exactly how to fit the dress perfectly e.g. Buttons, corsets or bustles.

If you want to completely change the style of your dress, this isn’t your dress. Talk to your stylists, take your time and don’t rush, you will find your perfect gown. The worst thing to do is rush into a decision and hope your seamstress can magically create your perfect gown, they are amazing, but there is only so much they can do!
- Allow room in your budget for your alterations, they will cost extra on top of the price of your gown, but your seamstress will only charge for the alterations she completes, she does not charge a ‘set price’ for every bride.
- You dress will always need altering, these dresses are not made to measure and therefore, alterations are important for the dress to fit perfectly.
- Trust your seamstress, they have been doing this for YEARS, they are skilled, experienced and we trust them implicitly, so, you should too!

Whimsical Romance – Dreamy Wedding Styling Inspiration

We teamed up with some of West Midlands best wedding suppliers at the beautiful Glewstone Court to bring together this incredible inspirational shoot, which is a feast for the eyes!

Jo Agar from Iris & Ivy Photography was the inspiration behind this shoot, here is what she had to say…”When I was introduced to a stunning Herefordshire wedding venue Glewstone Court, my heart fell in love and straight away I wanted to create some beautiful content there. My idea for this concept was to create a modern romantic theme with a whimsical twist” Here is “Whimsical Romance”.

Venue

The stunning ceremony room at Glewstone Court has two big beautiful arched windows that are the main feature of the room, creating a huge impact and perfect for a marriage ceremony to take place. I wanted to create a light and airy feel using the light flooding from the windows. Working closely with the team we wanted to create a ceremony with a go big or go home statement.

Styling and Florals

Both the styling and florals were created by Etiquette Event Styling. The vision for the ceremony was ‘whimsical romance’ with florals being a big part of the show. For the aisle styling we wanted to take a classic colour scheme but give it a modern twist with the focus being on impactful asymmetric arrangements and minimal foliage. With the addition of a suspended waterfall garland, the room was softened to create an intimate and romantic space. For added warmth, we picked out the tones of the florals by using soft pink and mauve hues in our candlelight. All of these elements were tied together with the use of rich textures in our ruched draping and patterned rugs.

Dresses

The Bride wears two dresses in this shoot. The first dress is a beautiful Jolie Berta style 22 – J09 A line glittery and shimmery dress with a structured cuppa corset and tulle bow sitting on the shoulders, available from award-winning bridal boutique TDR Bridal Birmingham. I chose this dress for the shimmery look that would catch the light and it fit perfect with a modern whimsical feel.

The second gown was the stunning Danica dress from Badgley Mischka, also available at TDR Bridal Birmingham. The Danica gown features jaw-dropping sequin tulle cape sleeves that run past its train. Embellished with subtle sparkle, the detachable cape sleeves gorgeously cascade down from the romantic off-shoulder sleeves. A classic mermaid silhouette with all-over floral lace accompanied with dazzling glitter lining, this gown created the perfect feel to the shoot, the Bride looked totally flawless and is sure to leave guests speechless.

Suits

I needed a suit to tie in with this softer look and colour scheme. The Venice Lounge Suit from TDR Menswear was the perfect fit. Michelle G Makeup Artist went with pink tones on the lips with Oriflamme and soft smokey browns on the eyes by Dior. To compliment the Brides beautiful skin she used Charlotte Tilbury and YSL. The whole look encompasses natural, beautiful and classy makeup something that never goes out of fashion.

Hair

Charlotte Holder Hair was inspired to create a beautiful boho, full and romantic half up hairstyle with soft waves and using a loose braid technique, which helped to create texture and a light airy volume to the hair working perfectly for the Jolie Berta gown.

For the second look with the Badgley Mischka dress, the hair was let down into soft waves that tumbled over the Bride’s back and shoulders, and sitting perfectly with the low cut romantic off-shoulder neck line of the dress. Both styles flowed beautifully with the dresses, and hair accessories were chosen to finish the looks perfectly.

Accessories

There were two dresses for the whimsical look, with the gowns full of sparkle and pretty detailing, Becky from Laurel Lime Bridal Accessories wanted the accessories to be a little more playful. She chose a large hair vine of flowers for the Jolie Berta dress as a finishing touch to the beautiful tulle bow shoulders and to add a little interest, little sprigs of handmade baby’s breath pins were popped into the braid.
For the second Badgley Mischka dress, a crown of large decorative flowers with delicate gold leaf accents. A more seductive piece paired with flowing ivory floral earrings to complete the look.

Cake

Using layered neutrals, Vanessa from The Sparkling Spatula created a textured canvas over both tiers. Flecked with glitzy gold, this brought an eye catching effect to the cake overall. Dramatic blush wafer sails edged with gold were added in a natural, offset cluster to draw in the eye and provide a modern yet timeless look to the cake overall and fitted perfectly with the colour scheme and feel of the shoot.

Stationery

Amber from Love Flora Studio designed some invites that fit with the modern side of the shoot. I received Ambers Paloma and Luna collection inspired by classic calligraphy, modern elegance at its finest. These gorgeous invites lay beautifully in the flat lays along with other Bridal prep details.
