4. Can you buy your own booze? Look for unlicensed venues, or choose one with a low corkage charge. Aside from a glass of bubbles or Appletise to toast the newlyweds, you don’t need to provide the alcohol all day and through the evening… Have a paying bar – it’s the norm these days, honest.

5. Is doing your own hair or makeup an option? We think it’s lovely to get pampered on the morning of your wedding, and we love the thought of a team of calm but fun professionals bringing the buzz. However, if money is tight, learn how to do your own, or ask a savvy friend to help. Even better, one of your bridesmaids might be up for the job! Just practise loads beforehand.

6. Can you make or bake? The joy of many clever friends and family getting involved in your big day. Ask each guest to make a triangle of bunting, ask your aunty who loves baking to make your cake… Does a family friend have a big posh car they can transport you in? It makes the occasion truly memorable for the people who help.

7. Got a friend who is great on social media? As them to create posts, reels and TikToks throughout the day. This can be their wedding gift to you!

8. Good at growing? Why not have a go at growing flowers for your reception and even your bouquet? Your flowers will be so special if they come from your own green fingers via your plant pots!

10. Don’t mind where you exchange vows? It’s radical, but we see more and more couples doing it – how about getting married at a registry office with just witnesses or your close family present and having a massive party another day/week/time? To some couples the party with all their loved ones is the main event; others might prefer something more intimate to exchange vows. And since your party is booked as a ‘party’ and not a ‘wedding’ and all the extra cost that entails, you will save heaps. Plus, two dresses!!! The National Wedding Show was back in town, at the NEC last weekend – the 22nd to 24th of September and once again we were thrilled to play a prominent role, with dresses on the catwalk, in the wedding lounge feature display and of course on our massive stand, which was super-sparkly and extra fun this time round.

We showcased some of the stunning new styles from some of our newest designers, giving brides a sneak peek at what’s to come!

The stand was filled with stunning new styles!
One of our favourite things is to tour the show just before it opens its door for the first time, to wish our fellow exhibitors well for the event and to see what’s out there! Wedding trends move so quickly, and many things can bring an extra dynamic to your big day. Plus guests have come to expect so much entertainment, especially considering the cost of being a wedding guest at weddings these days. So here are some of the brilliant things we saw, and loved!

The FlowerBomb Bar
Always alive with the chitter chatter of excited brides and their bridesmaids, and the chink of glasses as visitors celebrate the occasion.

Occasionwear
We don’t do occasionwear at TDR, but that doesn’t mean we don’t take note of the trends, and we were thrilled to see that pastels are back! While wedding dresses are all about the floral, the outfits for mums have toned down and feature all the subtle sugary shades.

Banging Tunes
One of the great things about being at the NEC is hearing all the brilliant bands and musicians doing their thing in an attempt to persuade couples that they are the ones to book to ensure a packed-out dancefloor from the first dance til the last.

We were absolutely wowed by @archinabox’s stand, which showed off their sustainable venue styling credentials. We have seen their work in many wedding venues near the boutique and so it was great to see them out and about. A trend that’s still going strong – why not have a photobooth to capture your guests at their most relaxed and having fun – the photographs from which you can treasure forever? At the show we saw @deluxebooths and the innovative @theperfectposeuk, which creates a crazy cool 360° image.

It’s a Kind of Magic
Who doesn’t love a close-up magician? Well, we certainly do, and we can’t quite keep away from them when we are at the National Wedding Show. We loved @mysteryguestuk whose mind games had us going mad! He was so fun and would bring such a great vibe to your big day.

Cakery Makery
We loved seeing all the gorgeous cakes you can choose from – always innovative but still coming out with the classics that we love we loved @elitecakedesignlimited and @motherbakincakes and the beautiful designs by @thecakepaletteuk

We almost always work with the show to create drama with our dresses and this year was no exception as we showcased styles by Ronald Joyce, Morilee and our new range of exclusive mini-wedding dresses, available only at TDR Bridal!

Flowers are everywhere! On the dresses, of course – 3D laser-cut embellishments, floral prints and fine embroidery were everywhere, but also on cakes, taking centre stage on the styling stands, giant flowers at the @FlowerBomb bar… There’s no escape from Flower Power for 2024 weddings.

Square necks

Necklines are always a trend we look out for each season, and the Spring 2024 collections brought a few different interpretations, but one we kept seeing is the square neck (as seen on Nicola Peltz at her wedding to Brooklyn Beckham, of course). A ballgown skirt works so well with a square neck, which accentuates the collarbone, and makes it a highly flattering feature.

Rebecca Baddeley, owner and Director of TDR Bridal and brains behind this incredible shoot tells all:

“Frustration… that’s the word that springs to mind when I think about how this shoot came about… Frustration and, if I’m honest, shame. I have a wonderful brother Chris, who happens to be disabled. His disability does not define him and it doesn’t stop him from doing whatever he sets his mind to. He excelled at school, he got his A-levels, he went to university, he has an excellent, high-flying career, he is married and a father to two gorgeous girls.

Then there’s beautiful soul Paige – a Senior Stylist at TDR who has worked with me for over three years. Paige once said to me: ‘This is the first place I’ve worked where I feel I can be myself!’ For context, she was referring to racism.

I have known for some time that I wanted to do something, needed to do something, to address the elephant in the bridal world room. I remember around eight years ago questioning why there were no black models at a trade show. Don’t get me wrong, things are improving but the diversity shown in the aesthetic we offer out to the world of engaged couples is seriously lacking and, as uncomfortable as it may be, we the collective bridal industry, need to take a long hard look in the mirror, and see what we are portraying. At the moment, it looks like a world where only straight, young, white, able-bodied females, buy wedding dresses. This isn’t real life and I am ashamed, sometimes, of this stereotypical, somewhat archaic representation of brides. My frustration at trying to find images to represent diversity for my Social Media and for my website was considerable; I just couldn’t find anything, anywhere! I just kept coming around to the same question… Do they think these people don’t get married??!!

This shoot was emotional, celebrational, nerve-wracking, exciting, thought-provoking, fun, soul-searching, empowering, educational, enlightening and every other emotion you could possibly imagine. The goosebumps were on high alert and the tears of joy were abundant. Whilst I understand that being a business that is inclusive, in all its forms, can be challenging, it is something I am incredibly passionate about. Being inclusive is always a work in progress, it’s a daily reminder to think about how we treat others and how we respond to different brides and this is a celebration of everybody.

I am immensely proud to know them all and humbled to have worked with these incredible, beautiful people. I hope these beautiful images get shared far and wide, that they are celebrated and championed, and I hope, above all, that these images elicit change. And it is also my hope that people’s perception of what a bride should look like is challenged and may be changed, so that we can all as a collective, ensure that diversity in all its forms is represented in the bridal industry.“
