Staying healthy in the lead up to your wedding is crucial to ensuring that you feel your best on the big day. Planning for the day you say ‘I do’ is magical but we’re the first to recognise that it can become incredibly stressful. With so much to organise and coordinate- whether it is ticking items off your to-do list, dealing with never-ending ‘wedmin’, or feeling pressured to meet the expectations of friends and family- it’s easy to neglect your health in the process. The stress and exhaustion can make it tempting to opt for quick fixes like takeaways after long days, or skipping the gym due to lack of time. It happens, and that is okay! But maintaining a balance is key to staying healthy physically and mentally.

To help you navigate this busy time, we have put together some top tips for keeping healthy before the big day. We’ve included healthy habits so that you can take care of your mind and body before your wedding day.

Exercising

Starting a regular exercise routine can improve your health and help you feel better on your wedding day. It is especially beneficial for reducing stress. You can try walking, running, swimming, or cycling, which are great activities if you are pressed for time. You could try going for a brisk 10 minute walk during your lunch break, or with your partner when you both get in from work.

If you’re not used to high-impact exercise, start slowly. The important thing is to get your body moving. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood booster, helping you to feel more relaxed and energised for the tasks ahead. As you incorporate a regular workout routine in the weeks and months leading up to your wedding, you should hopefully see a huge positive impact on your physical and mental well-being.

Eating well

A nutritious, well-balanced diet can help you feel refreshed before your wedding day. A balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help your skin glow, and your body clear out toxins. Nutritious foods help to keep your energy levels high, preventing mood swings or crashes that can result from sugary or processed foods.

Try to avoid processed or overly salty foods, as these can contribute to bloating. Limit your intake of refined sugar and spicy foods, as these can trigger skin breakouts or other skin issues. Opt for whole foods that will provide you with the energy you need to stay focused and calm.

Staying hydrated

One of the easiest and most effective ways to maintain good health is to stay hydrated. Staying properly hydrating can help to prevent headaches, fatigue and that sluggish feeling that sometimes hits in the afternoon. It also works wonders for you skin, giving it a natural glow perfect for wedding photos. Set yourself a goal to drink at least two litres of water a day, or more if you’re particularly active. A great way to keep track is to invest in a reusable water bottle that you can carry around with you. Having it close by will remind you to drink water consistently.

Managing stress

It’s so important to find ways to manage your stress. Planning your wedding is such an exciting time but try not to let it take over your life. Taking regular breaks and giving yourself time to relax is essential. Make sure to keep up with hobbies you enjoy. You could even try meditation or deep breathing. Even 10 minutes a day can be really beneficial. Another helpful strategy is journaling or “brain dumping.” Write down everything that’s on your mind—whether it’s tasks you need to complete, worries you have, or things that excite you about your wedding day. Once you have it all on paper, it will be easier to organize your thoughts and break the to-do list into manageable tasks. This can make the planning process feel much more organized and less overwhelming.

Prioritising sleep

Aim for seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night to allow your body the time it needs to rest, repair, and recharge. Good sleep really helps to improve mood, regulate stress, and stimulate your immune system. Good sleep hygiene can help you get a better night’s rest. Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule, even on weekends, and avoid using your phone or other electronics right before bed, as the blue light can interfere with your body’s ability to wind down. Also, consider cutting back on caffeine and sugar in the afternoon and evening.

You can also make your sleep environment more conducive to relaxation by investing in a silk pillowcase, which can reduce skin irritation and help your skin retain moisture overnight. This simple change can promote healthier, more hydrated skin by the time your wedding day arrives.

Understanding Wedding Dress Sizing

Wedding dress sizing can be a bit different from what you’re used to. Unlike high street sizes, wedding dress designers follow their own specific size charts. Seamstresses are incredibly skilled and can work wonders with your dress, so never hesitate to ask for alterations or personalisation. It’s your special day, and your dress should be nothing less than perfect.

When are my fittings?

2. Wrap it Properly:

Before placing your dress into the suitcase, we wrap it in acid-free tissue paper to prevent any potential color transfer or damage to delicate fabrics. We do not use any colored tissue paper, as it may bleed onto your dress. Our prep team, Jo and Jeanie, gently fold your dress and place it in the garment bag, taking care not to bunch or crease the fabric.

Jeannie, beautiful inside and out, is responsible for making sure your dress passes its final inspection at TDR. She is head of the Prep Room, she’s an absolute perfectionist and everything goes by her before it leaves TDR for your special day.

Jeannie works alongside Jo who has a special place in our hearts, having worked for TDR for over 10 years, she knows all there is to know about wedding dresses and is responsible for making sure every Wedding dress leaves TDR in perfect condition, perfectly steamed and pressed and beautifully packed. She excels at her work and always goes the extra (million) miles for all her brides.

3. Carry it as Hand Luggage:

While it might be tempting to check your wedding dress with your other luggage, the safest option is to carry it as hand luggage. By keeping your dress with you throughout the journey, you’ll have greater control over its safety and minimize the risk of loss or damage. Most airlines allow passengers to bring a garment bag as part of their carry-on allowance, but it’s always wise to double-check with your airline’s specific policies beforehand.

4. Check the Dimensions:

5. Store it Carefully:

Once on board the plane, store your garment bag in the overhead compartment or in the closet designated for hanging garments, if available. Avoid placing it in the overhead compartment directly above your seat, as these spaces tend to fill up quickly and may not provide enough room to hang your dress properly.

6. Be Mindful of Wrinkles:

Despite your best efforts, some wrinkling may occur during your journey to your destination. To minimize wrinkles, gently shake out your dress once you’ve arrived at your destination and hang it in a well-ventilated area. If necessary, you can use a handheld steamer to remove any stubborn wrinkles, but be sure to test it on a small, inconspicuous area first to avoid damaging the fabric. Another trick is to hang your dress in a bathroom with the shower on, and the steam will help any additional creases drop out.
