“So there’s no set “rule” to this, every bride is different. It ultimately depends on you and your individual circumstances.

You might want to be super organised like some of our brides and shop 24-30 months in advance- this gives you longer to plan, organise & budget well for your wedding.

12 – 18 months in advance – The majority of our brides do this as it gives us plenty of time for your wedding dress to arrive and for all your fittings to be done.

You might only have 6 – 12 months because you got a great deal on a shorter lead time with your venue? This is no problem for us at all. We will still have plenty of time to have your dress made & delivered to us plus we have the added benefit of 4 onsite seamstresses so you’re guaranteed to have your dress fitted perfectly in time for your special day.

How did you decorate your venue?

We went for a rustic look with log slices on each table with a lateen on top. And some jars of gypsophillia and a few crystals with a eucalyptus table number with Polaroid in the back. Also on the tables we ordered little games of noughts and crosses that had our names on and the date of our wedding. We also bought some baby books and bubbles to keep the babies entertained. And we had a sweets’ cast that went down a treat, everybody loved it! We also had personalised colouring sheets for the children which were from Etsy and bought some crayons. On the top table we had a nice log sign which said our names and the date of the wedding. And some nice fairy lights with some garland. We also had some big glass Jars filled with water ready for the bridesmaids’ bouquets and my bouquet!

What music did you choose for the ceremony?

Can’t Help Falling in Love With You (piano version) for entrance music because it sounded so beautiful. And for when we were signing the registry we had How Long will I Love You? – also a piano version. Because we both really liked the song. And for exit music we had Have I Told You Lately?, which was covered by Michael Bublé because we both like him and we wanted something happy to walk out to.

What were your best decisions for the wedding?

Having it laid back because everyone felt nice and relaxed, and the atmosphere was amazing. Also, I gave my mum my phone and looking back on the photos from other’s perspectives was really nice. Lastly having the ceremony at 1.30pm meant that we could all eat beforehand and so we weren’t really hungry, which has happened to me at other weddings I have been to.

What advice do you have for other brides?

Enjoy every single minute of your special day, because it goes so quickly. Take some time out the day just to be with each other as newlyweds just to breathe and to talk to one another. When planning your wedding remember to take breaks because it can sometimes be overwhelming, and also plan it for what you and your partner want, no-one else

Yes I did – our family friend did our wedding cake. And shopping around for things. Also, I bought some reception decorations from the TDR Bride Facebook group, which saved me some money.

Because Dan is in the army it was sometimes difficult to communicate. There is so much to choose from decoration wise and with venues and sometimes gets overwhelming. Remember to takes breaks from planning

The TDR team are absolutely fantastic, I was nervous to try on wedding dresses. But they all made me and my family who came with me, so welcome from the moment we walked through the door. The experience at TDR was amazing I felt excited to try dresses on and didn’t feel nervous anymore. And Molly was brilliant, she really listened to what I liked and got me to try on a range of different styles. As sometimes you can be surprised with a dress you thought you didn’t like. 24 months to go – Set Your Budget

Planning a wedding is expensive, so it’s extremely important to know your budgets, know where you can spend and know where you need to be careful. To give you an idea, our average wedding dress is between £1500-£2000 and this will usually be the same at most bridal boutiques. £635 is a starting point at TDR, unless you are looking to purchase a ‘ready to wear’ (otherwise known as ‘off the rail’).

Do Your Research

Reviews are SO important, transparency is key within bridal. You are planning the most important day of your life and you are putting a lot of trust in your suppliers, so make sure you are choosing the right ones. Have a look out for preferred suppliers, for example, if you have chosen your venue, have a look to see who their suppliers are, as this will often indicate who you should research more. Pinterest is always good, but not always real, you’ve probably seen the quote “I hope my real wedding is as good as my Pinterest wedding’. It will often be better to have a look on bridal retailers own websites, to see their stock and then further research their designers.

It’s time to start your wedding dress shopping! we always recommend that you do your dress shopping within 4 weeks – this way, you avoid finding your dress, then finding out weeks later the dress has been discontinued (is no longer being manufactured). On average, a dress takes around 6-9 months to arrive in store, so ordering 18-12 months before gives you plenty of time to fit in all the other appointments you will need to add in any alterations around your busy wedding planning schedule.

By now your dress MUST be ordered, otherwise you are risking either having to pay an added rush cut fee to ensure the dress arrives in time, or simply designers refusing the order. Most bridal retailers, including TDR, will ask for a 50% deposit to be placed, the remaining balance is due when your dress arrives in store.

6 weeks to go – First Fitting Begins

We usually advise that your fittings between 4-6 weeks before your wedding. This depends on the time of year, during busy season May-September, it will usually be 6 weeks before. It also depends on whether you are losing weight and want your fittings as close to your wedding date as possible. Alterations are usually a separate charge to the cost of your wedding gown. Remember that by now you must have the shoes and underwear you will be wearing on your wedding date.

Your final fitting will be around 2 weeks before your wedding date – most brides have between 2-3 fittings. Bring one family member with you to this appointment, as this is an extremely important life moment! They may also need to know how to fasten your dress or attach your bustle for the evening.

1-2 days to go – Collect Your Dress

It’s time to pick up your dress! If you are getting married abroad then your bridal boutique should have a system in place where they can pack your dress into a flight box. When transporting your dress, make sure you have room in your car, ideally lying across a flat surface, unfolded. It is important to take your dress out of the dress back as soon as you can, without having to repack this yourself, hang your dress up high so the train is lying flat. Top tip – if there are any creases, DO NOT STEP NEAR AN IRON. Stick your shower on really hot and hang the dress up. The steam will let the creases drop out from your dress.

Our wonderful wedding planner Flora Bekri had decorated our venue and she did an amazing job. We hadn’t seen it until the actual wedding day and we absolutely loved it.

Only marry your best friend, enjoy the day and don’t let anything spoil it.

Did you make any cost savings, and how?

The dress was cheaper than we was expecting, which was very nice.
Our wedding planner helped saving some money on flowers by reusing the gazebo flowers for the dinner table centrepiece (I know, very creative) and she did the stationery herself.

Yes, loads. Our best man missed his initial flight and my sister had a delayed flight, thankfully they both made it. My sister (our bridesmaid) only arrived 30 minutes before the ceremony and had just enough time to get ready. I left my wedding dress at the hotel’s reception on a sofa, luckily it was still there when Dave went to pick it up safe and sound. Last but not least, I was suffering with hayfever for the first time and without realising I had taken too many tablets. I didn’t realise that had affected me but people were telling me that I wasn’t making sense and they knocked me out and made me fall asleep and only woke up two hours before the wedding!

We followed no traditions, nothing borrowed, not blue, nothing old, however I had something new. And I forgot to throw the bouquet! We did the speeches and we had the first dance though.

What were the challenges of planning and organising the wedding?

We booked the wedding during the COVID first lockdown, we then decided to buy a house at the same time of planning the wedding and with me being Romanian and Dave English we had a lot of trouble with the paperwork and lastly, we didn’t know if everybody, including ourselves will be able to enter Greece in August last year because areas of Greece we still in lockdown and in the red. With all this going on we didn’t for one moment think about cancelling or postponing the wedding.

We had string quartet music, Why? It’s more delicate and peaceful for everyone’s nerves! We also had a bagpipe player walk all our guests in and walk us out of the ceremony.

Having a small family wedding was our best decision – it made it more special to us and more enjoyable and relaxing. We didn’t have the added pressure of pleasing multiple people.

How did you meet?:

James and I met in reception, when we were four years old. We went to school together and after school we met again on New Year 2016, the rest is history.

How many dresses did you try on before you found the one?

I came into the shop once before and tried on five dresses with no idea what I even liked. When I returned in April 2021, I tried on another five and kept putting off the dress I ended up choosing, thinking I wouldn’t like it as much. It was so different to what I thought I wanted.

Was there a theme or colour scheme for your wedding?

Black and white monochrome.

How did you decorate your venue?

The amazing Etiquette Events totally embraced my vision, put their stamp on it and created the most elegant and stylish décor I have ever seen!

What music did you choose for the first dance? Why?

We chose Can’t help falling in love – the Kina Grannis version because James proposed to this song.

What were your best decisions for the wedding?

I loved everything about the day, all the big things were amazing, but the best decision we made was taking five minutes out here and there to just go and walk round the grounds together and have a prosecco alone after the ceremony – just to have that time to celebrate us.

What advice do you have for other brides?

The day really does go far too quickly, so take five minutes here and there with your partner to embrace it. Sit back and take it all in, when else do you have everyone you love in the same room celebrating you!? You will never prevent the grass stains on the shoes and on the dress so just be OK with it. Be organised before so you can completely relax on the day and if anything goes wrong it literally will not matter in the moment. Lastly, book a videographer – you will not regret it!

Did you make any cost savings, and how?

We had a graphic designer friend who designed all of our stationery and invitations. My stepfather made our cake stand and signage stands because he is a welder. Call in all the favours from your creative family and friends! We also bartered with pretty much everyone and most suppliers were very flexible to meet budgets, don’t ask, don’t get! And a huge one for us… We wanted the huge three tier cake but didn’t want to pay for the huge three tier cake. So we had two tiers (this was enough for our guests to have a portion each) then we had made a fake tier, which the magician Nadia (Pretty Tasty) covered in icing and it looked identical… No-one would have known! Huge three tier cake for half the price!

What were your favourite moments? Straight after we got married, we went into the back room and there was a prosecco waiting for us, I remember us high fiving and just being so happy we were married. Another highlight of course was the shot cart and the CO2 guns, that was wild!

Did you follow all the traditions?

Not at all, we did lots of untraditional things and lots of unique things, we completely planned the day for us, and everything was personalised for us. As a complete bonus everyone else loved it too!

Working 9-5 haha! Honestly it was tough but was worth every hour put into it.

Any regrets? Anything you would have done differently, or included with hindsight?

No regrets at all, it was perfect! I would have probably got ready slightly earlier If I got to do it again as the last hour before the wedding went so quickly, I was ready to enjoy a glass of prosecco with the girls right before and then remembered I needed 20 minutes with the registrars! So be ready with an hour at least to go, I think. Oh and I would have practiced the first dance, we didn’t think about it and that was such a funny, awkward two minutes with everyone staring at you, we pretty much giggled the whole time as was like, what do we do!?

Yes! THANK YOU! Thank you so much for being the most friendly, welcoming and professional ladies. You made me feel so special and helped me with my confidence. You found me the perfect dress and I loved every appointment coming in. You are all so wonderful!

If you have planned to visit a bridal shop that has no reviews anywhere on the web, then you MUST ask yourself why? Do not be fooled by glossy websites and lots of google listings if there are no genuine reviews online to back that up. Honesty and transparency are absolutely imperative when it comes to your wedding dress.

Are the bridal shops you are choosing in any association or affiliation?

There is only one association in the bridal industry which is worth its salt, and that is the Retail Bridalwear Association or RBA. This is the only association that inspects its member’s stores & accounts, has a strict code of conduct, checks out the shop’s suppliers and credit status, plus has the added bonus of the Brides Protection Scheme. It’s the same as buying your honeymoon from an ATOL or ABTA registered travel agent. Don’t get hoodwinked by other “Associations” such as the BBRA, this is absolutely NOT the same.

Visit no more than three bridal shops.

An excellent bridal shop should have at least 150 different styles in store (we have around 300), so if you visit three good shops, then you have had access to at least 450 and potentially 1000 different styles. Be careful, you don’t want to become “dressed out” or “desensitised” by visiting too many shops and becoming utterly confused and probably a bit deflated.

Check the location of your shops and their opening hours.

Will the locations work for you later on, once you have ordered your dress? Is it easily accessible for fittings? Is there a car park? What days are they open, do they offer a late-night appointment? You need to know all this information BEFORE you go into a bridal shop. If the location and opening hours are not going to work for you, then there is no point visiting. Find shops which are convenient for you and your lifestyle.

Don’t be frightened to make your decision.

Most brides instinctively know when they have found “the one”, pretty much the same as the man! You just know it’s right. However, if you are indecisive and worried about committing to buying, you really shouldn’t be. Statistics show that only over 70% of all brides find their dress in the first bridal shop they visit. We have so many brides who LOVE LOVE LOVE the dress, then say, oh but I can’t buy just-in-case I see something else. The fact is you will always see something else, of course, you will, but there has to come to a point where you say “you know what, I’m sticking with this one” just like the man, there are millions out there, and you could just keep on looking… forever!

Know your finances.

If you are going dress shopping, be prepared to buy. Don’t treat wedding dress shopping as just a happy day out because that mindset will not help you to find “the one” you will only become confused, disheartened and ultimately stressed. So many brides are amazed when they see their dress at the first shop they visit, but why? For instance, if you are going to Jimmy Choo London to buy a pair of shoes, why would you be surprised to find them at Jimmy Choo? Have a clear understanding of your budget and discuss this if you need to with each shop before you book to visit them.
